Steenburg attracts golfers seeking the total golf experience, offering the opportunity to “bump and run” (a rare shot in South Africa) and to meet the challenges of sand pits and waterways all within view of the fabulous scenery of Ou Kaapse Veg (The Old Cape Road) Mountain Pass.

The par-three, not-so-short, 14th hole features the largest green in Africa at 76 meters in length; indigenous shrubs guard the green and the mound has been shaped to echo the distinctive mountain range behind. Steenberg has been regularly named as one of the best conditioned courses in South Africa Golf Digest’s annual Top 100.
The 18 hole course was designed to make full use of natural features and hazards such as the vineyards, pine forest and gentle waterways. Its environmental diversity gives the course its unique character. A well-designed clubhouse allows golfers to enjoy the 19th hole!

The Royal Cape is Cape Town’s oldest golf club established in 1885 initially on Waterloo Green at Wynberg Military Camp and then to Rondebosch Common until it was located at its present site which it occupies to this day in 1906 – playing conditions were rough, but it soon went from rugged to Royal!

Perhaps the oldest known photograph of golf being played in South Africa. Almost certainly taken in 1886, it shows Gen. Torrens driving on the Waterloo Green Links, watched by Dr. David Gill, in the brown suit and Colonel Curtis, Officer Commanding H.M. Cavalry in Natal. Printed on porcelain - the photograph was presented to the Club by Dr. Gill shortly before his return to England in 1906.

In 1910 the Club played host to the SA Open and Amateur Championships for the first time. It was in this same year that the title "Royal" was conferred on the Cape Golf Club by H M King George V in commemoration of the visit of H R H The Duke of Connaught, representing the King at the opening of the first Union of South Africa parliament and the Club has gone from strength to strength. There is so much history to check out in the bar over a relaxing drink at the end of the game.

The course today is a fine test of golf, worthy of its championship rating and conforming to USGA standards. Essentially it is a flat parkland course with lovely views of the surrounding mountains. But golfers should not be deceived! The fairways are narrow, demanding extreme accuracy off the tee, wayward shots can be heavily penalized amongst the trees and the greens are well bunkered.

There is also plenty of water on the course, notably at the corner of the 3rd, 4th, 5th and also the 14th, 15th and 16th. The 4th and 15th are beautiful par-3's, the 15th in particular requiring a finely judged shot over the water which encroaches right up to the edge of the green. The most difficult holes are the par-4 3rd, at 435m the longest two-shotter on the course, and the par-4 14th, a dog-leg right played into the teeth of the prevailing south-easter and with water guarding the right front and side of the green.

Clovelly ranks as one of the most picturesque and challenging courses in the Cape Peninsula; famous for its rolling, computer-irrigated fairways and undulating holes, as well as its championship level greens, Clovelly complements its rich coastal environment. Natural sand dunes abut the course, which is blessed with water features and a wide variety of indigenous fauna – especially birdlife such as guinea fowl, pheasant, peacock, steppe buzzard and flora.

Of moderate length (5 869m – Par 72 men & Par 73 ladies), Clovelly is unique in that it follows neither the links nor the American tradition in its design. It is a tight course by South African standards, and has a fine blend of testing holes, with the Silvermine River, and adjacent ponds adding much to their character. Each hole has a special distinctive setting, with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and False Bay.
